Season of the witch

Updated: Feb 24

As we near summer’s end, I feel an energetic shift on our doorstep. I start to get hayfever as everything is so dry from summer, the trees, plants and grass drop pollen and seed. It has been so thick some years, you can see the yellow pollen dust sit upon a puddle of water. It’s a sign that things will begin to go dormant soon.

March is a very busy month in my house, we have 7 birthdays in the family, netball season starts and I need to get my butt into action and prepare for Mabon & Samhain.

This is my favourite time of the year. Mabon is one of my most cherished pagan holidays.

Mabon is the autumn equinox, it’s a time of harvest and preparation for the darker months ahead (winter). Traditionally families would have harvested their crops by now, or finishing their harvest and have started preserving their food to build their supply for winter. My family have been making Tomato sauce, Chutney, juicing lemons and freezing the juice, pasta sauce ect… Between Mabon & Samhain marks the beginning of pumpkin season, I can start picking my pumpkins to roast & puree for soups, stews and baking over winter. I like to be prepared as I’m busy coaching junior netball and I know I won’t have a great deal of time once we are in the thick of it. I also use this time to work on my own personal fitness goals.

Mabon is also that time of year I work protection magic. I strengthen the wards on my property, home and hearth. Do a big energetic cleanse and eagerly await the end of fire restrictions so I can light a bonfire. I set the intentions of what energy I will allow and won’t allow in my home and hearth as this is my sacred space. I also like to go foraging for wild mushrooms and dehydrate them for the winter. I build up my apothecary herbs so I have what I need on hand when coughs and colds enter the house. I reset and cleanse my altars, give offerings and practice gratitude for an abundant harvest.

Once I feel I’m organised, its time to wind down and start thinking about Samhain. How will I celebrate Samhain, how will I connect with my ancestors and honour them? What are my goals for the witches new year? It’s a time of introspection, shadow work and personal development. This autumn I will be working on gaining certifications in other styles of energy healing and undergoing shadow work coaching to improve upon my practice.

Samhain is one of the most spiritually active night’s of the year as the veil is very thin, the spirits walk among us which is why it’s important for any witch and spiritual practitioner to work protection magic prior to Samhain. You want those protection wards at their full strength before the darker months. It’s a great time to practice divination, pull out those cards, pendulums, meditate and seek guidance from your ancestors & Spirit team. Its such a magical season that brings me so much joy, I look forward to it more than any other holiday.

Stay tuned as I have a lot of cool stuff coming!
